Next deadline for EAG Student Sponsorship & Early Career Science Ambassador Programs: 1 October

To continue to support early career training during the current Covid-19 pandemic, the Early Career Science Ambassador and Student Sponsorship Programs have been adapted  to allow for participation at fully virtual events in addition to hybrid (onsite + virtual) or fully onsite meetings, with funding to cover registration and abstract fees.

Applicants who plan to attend an event online may be based in any country. For attendance in person at an onsite event, the eligibility criteria for the two programs remain unchanged. See the EAG Early Careers webpage  for full details of each program and to apply. Next deadline: 1 October.

Spinodal decomposition of supercritical fluid forms melt network in a silicate-H2O system

Supercritical fluid in silicate-H2O systems, with composition intermediate between silicate melt and aqueous fluid, has distinctive physicochemical properties and can be an important agent of mass transfer in Earth’s interior. Decreasing temperature and pressure drive supercritical...

Tight bounds on missing late veneer in early Archean peridotite from triple oxygen isotopes

Oxygen isotopes provide a unique possibility to study Earth’s late accretion phase from a lithophile element perspective, because most carbonaceous chondrites – meteorites that likely resemble the composition of the terrestrial late veneer – have markedly different Δ′17O values than...

The role of amorphous P-bearing precursors on barite formation

Past climate variations on Earth are recorded in sedimentary rocks by chemical and biological indicators. In this sense, investigations of sedimentary marine barites (BaSO4) have been fundamental to reconstruct geochemical evolution of palaeoenvironments. Despite...

High pressure redistribution of nitrogen and sulfur during planetary stratification

Nitrogen is essential to life, and yet is also the most depleted element in the Earth relative to gas-rich chondrites. A key expression of Earth’s N depletion is its elevated sulfur-nitrogen (S/N) ratio. Primordial stratification into a core, mantle, and atmosphere is the largest mass transfer...

Potassium isotope evidence for sediment recycling into the orogenic lithospheric mantle

Post-collisional highly potassic magmatism in large orogenic belts has been taken as evidence for recycling of continent-derived K-rich sediments within the orogenic lithospheric mantle. Potassium isotopes may provide important insights into the origins of K in these magmas, since...

Sulfur and mercury MIF suggest volcanic contributions to Earth’s atmosphere at 2.7 Ga

The Archean eon is associated with large-scale changes in Earth’s geosphere and biosphere, including the onset of plate tectonics and the expansion of oxygenic photosynthesis, although the full impacts of these changes on the atmosphere remain unclear. Here we present coupled...

Longer Days Likely Boosted Earth’s Early Oxygen

[EOS] Microbial mats in a Lake Huron sinkhole, combined with modeling work, suggest that the changing length of Earth’s day could have played a key role in oxygenating the atmosphere. Gregory Dick, a professor of Earth and environmental sciences at the University of Michigan, had just completed a public lecture on a Saturday morning in 2016 when a colleague asked...

Is ‘Blue Hydrogen’ all that green? [Podcast]

[BBC Science Hour: segment from 10:25 to 19:20] Hydrogen is being much touted as an alternative to natural gas as a source of fuel for homes in a low-carbon world. In particular, “blue” hydrogen – hydrogen made from fossil fuels but with the carbon dioxide being captured at the point of production – is said to be some sort of transitional fuel that could be introduced into current…

World’s biggest machine capturing carbon from air turned on in Iceland

[The Guardian] The world’s largest plant designed to suck carbon dioxide out of the air and turn it into rock has started running, the companies behind the project said on Wednesday. The plant, named Orca after the Icelandic word “orka” meaning “energy”, consists of four units, each made up of two metal boxes that look like shipping containers. Constructed by...

Volcanic eruptions may have spurred first 'whiffs' of oxygen in Earth's atmosphere

[ScienceDaily] A new analysis of 2.5-billion-year-old rocks from Australia finds that volcanic eruptions may have stimulated population surges of marine microorganisms, creating the first puffs of oxygen into the atmosphere. This would change existing stories of Earth's early atmosphere, which assumed that most changes in the early atmosphere were controlled by...

Terrawatch: supercontinents and the search for habitable planets

[The Guardian] It’s unlikely humans will be around to see it, but in about 250m years Earth’s land masses will have moved together to form the next supercontinent. By this time the sun will be a little brighter and the Earth’s rotation will have slowed down, making a day about 30 minutes longer than now. So how will it feel to live on this future Earth?...

One-third of Sun-like stars may have eaten their planets

[Science] Like the Greek god Chronos, a good number of stars devour their children. As many as one-third of them have swallowed one or more of their own planets, a new study suggests. The findings could help astronomers rule out stellar systems unlikely to contain Earth-like worlds. “This will probably end up being one of the classic papers on this subject,” says...

Clouds affected by wildfire smoke may produce less rain

[Science News] When smoke rises from wildfires in the western United States, it pummels clouds with tiny airborne particles. What happens next with these clouds has been largely unstudied. But during the 2018 wildfire season, researchers embarked on a series of seven research flights, including over the Pacific Northwest, to help fill this gap. Using airborne instruments...
