Experimental evidence for fluid-induced melting in subduction zones

Although subduction zones are the main source of seismic and volcanic hazards on Earth, the causes of melting in volcanic arcs are still not fully understood. Recent models suggested that melting in the mantle wedge is not caused by hydrous fluids, but by...

Geochemistry Making the News

Researchers find climate change increases risk of mercury contamination

[Phys.org] As global temperatures continue to rise, the thawing of permafrost in Arctic areas is being accelerated and mercury that has been trapped in the frozen ground is now being released in various forms into surrounding waterways, soil and air.
This press article is based on an article recently published in Geochemical Perspectives Letters.

Ancient rain gauge: New evidence links groundwater, climate changes in deep time

[Phys.org] Changes in groundwater millions of years ago created alternating layers of vivid yellow and brown in the mineral sphalerite, and those variations align with movements in Earth's orbit that impacted climate in the deep past, Penn State scientists found.
This press article is based on an article recently published in Geochemical Perspectives Letters.

Glacial rivers absorb carbon faster than rainforests, scientists find

[The Guardian] In the turbid, frigid waters roaring from the glaciers of Canada’s high Arctic, researchers have made a surprising discovery: for decades, the northern rivers secretly pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at a rate faster than the Amazon rainforest.

NASA is Now Considering a Pluto Orbiter Mission

[Universe Today] NASA’s New Horizons mission taught us a lot about Pluto, the ice dwarf planet. But the spacecraft sped past Pluto so quickly, we only got high-resolution images of one side of the planet, the so-called “encounter side.”
